CSE (Council of Science Editors) Citation Guide: Name-Year System

Guidelines

Citations in the name-year format are referred to in the body of the paper using the in-text style.  The in-text style for citations includes the author’s name and the year of publication within parentheses and the citations are listed alphabetically by the author’s surname in the end references page.

Citing Books

BOOK – ONE AUTHOR

Author.  Date.  Title.  Edition.  Place of publication:  Publisher.

Example:

Mader S.  2000.  Inquiry into life.  9th ed.  Boston (MA):  McGraw-Hill.

BOOK – TWO TO TEN AUTHORS

Authors.  Date.  Title.  Edition.  Place of publication:  Publisher. 

Example:

Misner C, Thorne K, Wheeler J.  1973.  Gravitation.  San Francisco (CA):  W. H. Freeman.

CHAPTER OF A BOOK

Author(s) of chapter.  Date.  Title of chapter.  In:  editor(s) name, editor(s).  Title of the book. Edition.  Place of publication:  Publisher.  p. page numbers of the chapters.

Example:

Vollmer G.  1987.  On supposed circularities in an empirically oriented epistemology.  In:  Radnitzky G, Bartley WW 3rd, editors.  Evolutionary epistemology, rationality, and the sociology of knowledge.  La Salle (IL):  Open Court.  p. 163-202.
