Federal Statutory Research: Checking for Updates to the Code

Checking for Updates on Westlaw and Lexis

It is important to use West’s KeyCite and Lexis’ Shepard to identify pending legislation impacting current research findings. Westlaw and Lexis allow users to:

  • retrieve the resource,
  • view cases where the statute has been cited, and
  • view the legislative history of the section.

Example of Shepard report:

Search for “10 U.S.C. § 123(a)”

Checking for Updates from the Office of the Law Revision Counsel

The Classification Table provided by the Office of the Law Revision Counsel can also provide a guide to the United States Code affected by recent laws.

Checking for Updates in Print

Check the pocket part and the supplement for changes to the law.

A pocket part is a pamphlet placed inside the “pocket” at the back of the volume. A supplement is a softcover volume used for periodic updates and is placed at the end of the title.

Kahn Law Library subscribes to the United States Code Annotated in print including updated volumes and pocket parts.
