Librarian's Pro Tips for Effective Searching

Research can be (and often is) a trial and error process. Use these tips to create more effective searches to find the materials you need quicker.

  • Know all of the library resources that you have at your disposal:

  Library Catalog

Research Guides

Journal Finder

  • Use the "Google Scholar (HPU-Specific) link on our homepage to search for materials on the web, as well as HPU content. You must use the link on the library homepage to do this.
  • Be as specific as possible when it comes to searching; think about all possible keywords you can use to effectively describe your topic.
  • Make use of abstracts and reference sections when you find articles or books that relate to your topic (abstracts have keywords for searching and reference sections have articles that you might be interested in reviewing as well).
  • Use the Boolean search operators AND, OR, NOT to create more effective searches:

"AND" tightens your search

"OR" expands your search

"NOT" eliminates terms that are not related to your subject
