Banned & Challenged Books: Religion

Banned or Challenged on Religious Grounds

The following entries represent a sample of books that have been challenged or banned for religious reasons. Book censorship in the Western culture can be traced all the way back to the beginnings of Christianity and examples of book censorship by the Church include the burning of books during the Council of Ephesus and the establishment of a forbidden book list by the Pope in the fifth century (Karolides, Bald, and Sova, 1999.)

Click on each book to learn more about it and where you can find it at HPU Libraries.

For more information on the history of Church censorship, as well as these and other banned books, please read "100 Banned Books: Censorship Histories of World Literature". or "Literature Suppressed on Religious Grounds."
