Required Details for Citations

What do you need to include in a complete citation for an online journal article?

  • Author last name(s), and initials. All author names should be included unless there are more than 6. If more than 6 authors are responsible for the material, use the first three author names and "et al"
  • Title - the article title, and subtitle if present
  • Abbreviated name of journal (see 13.10 in style manual for abbreviations)
  • Year published
  • Volume number and issue number
  • Page numbers
  • DOI (if present)

What do you need to include in a complete citation for a website?

  • Author last name(s) and initials, if available. All author names should be included unless there are more than 6. If more than 6 authors contributed, use the first three author names and "et al"
  • Title of the specific web content cited (if no title is available, use the name of the organization responsible for the website)
  • Name of the website
  • Date webpage was published
  • Date of last update
  • Date you accessed the content
  • URL (verify the URL works)
