Primary Sources : Smith Library Microform search

Primary sources are contemporary accounts of an event, written or depicted by someone who experienced or witnessed the event in question.

Searching the Catalog for Primary Sources (Microfiche)

Smith Library's collection of microfiche (a postcard-sized flat film about 10 x 14 mm carrying a matrix of micro images) is comprised mostly of Evans Early American collection. There are other items in microfiche format as well, though.

In order to search through Smith Library's microfiche collection, please do the following:

  • Click on Advanced Search in the library's catalog.
  • In the first search box, select "Keyword" as the limiter.
  • Enter in the term (with quotes): "1st Floor - Microforms"
  • Below the three search boxes, under "Library", select "HPU Libraries, High Point University".
  • At this point if you click search now, you will see all items that are a microform format held by Smith Library (over 32, 000 items).
  • If you want to narrow your search, select the second search box, and again select "Keyword" as the limiter.
  • Enter your search term putting quotes around it. This will limit the results to more relevant items.
  • The item will be located in our microfilm room on the first floor. Ask a library staff member for assistance in finding and viewing the item.

Searching the Catalog for Primary Sources (Microfilm)

The Smith Library microfilm (a 16 mm or 35 mm film to motion picture standard is used, usually unperforated. Roll microfilm is stored on open reels) collection is comprised mostly of newspapers on rolled microfilm. The only indexing available is for the newspaper (or item ) title, thus there are fewer items listed. However each one contains a daily copy of the paper for a specific time range.

In order to search through Smith Library's microfilm collection, please do the following:

  • Click on Advanced Search in the library's catalog.
  • In the first search box, select "Keyword" as the limiter.
  • Enter in the term (with quotes): "1st Floor - Microforms - Microfilm".
  • Below the three search boxes, under "Library", select "HPU Libraries, High Point University".
  • At this point if you click search now, you will see all items that are a microfilm format held by Smith Library.
  • If you want to narrow your search, select the second search box, and again select "Keyword" as the limiter.
