eBooks at Kahn Law Library

How to locate, access, and navigate ebooks through the Kahn Law and HPU Libraries collections.

The West Academic Study Aids Collection provides students (and faculty/staff) with access to eBooks, audiobooks, and video content. Some of the frequently-used series that are availble as eBooks include:

  • Acing Series
  • Black Letter Outlines
  • Concepts and Insights
  • Concise Hornbook Series
  • Gilbert Law Summaries
  • Nutshells
  • Short and Happy Guides
  • Exam Pro Series

Access

Create an Account

Access all of the resources in the West Academic Study Aids Collection, and create annotations, save favorites, download titles, and more, by creating an account affiliated with Kahn Law Library.

  1. Go to the Study Aids Collection site.
  2. Click "Sign In" in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Choose "Create an Account" under the username and password boxes. Follow the prompts to fill out your information. Under the "School" find High Point University School of Law.
  4. Verify your email address one of two ways:
    1. If you are already logged in, click on your name in the upper right-hand corner and click My Account. Enter your school or work email address under “My School/Organization” Click “Check for Materials” and check your email for a verification link.
    2. The next time you log in you will be prompted to confirm your email. Enter your school email address and check your email for a verification link.

Once you have verified your email address, you can access all the content available in your subscription and log in off campus.

Navigation

Finding eBooks - Browsing

Below the search bar on the home page, there are a series of ways to access the available eBooks. Select "1L Subjects" or "2L/3L Subjects" for course subject areas. Select "Academic/Career Success" to see support materials for academic success, bar exam prep, or career success. "Content Type" will show types of eBooks as well as content like audiobooks and video. Choose "Series" to choose from types of study aids, like Nutshells or Exam Pro guides.

Finding eBooks - Keyword Searching

To find eBooks by a specific author or topic, or if you know the title, use the search bar at the top of the page. Clicking on "Search Tips" under the search bar will help you with advanced keyword searching.

Special Features

Offline Reading

Titles in the West Academic Study Aids Collection are available for offline reading in the VitalSource Bookshelf app. The VitalSource Bookshelf app is available through the Apple Store for iOS devices or the Google Play Store for Android devices. Download the West Academic Audio app to listen to audiobooks and lectures offline.

  1. Sign in to subscription.westacademic.com.
  2. Search for the book you would like to read offline and select it from the search results page.
  3. Once in the book, click the “open in eReader” eBook button at the top of the page to open the book in the VitalSource eReader.
  4. The first time you access a book in the VitalSource eReader you will be prompted to complete your VitalSource account. Follow the prompts to create a new account or sign in with an existing VitalSource account. (Note: preferably with the same email address used to create your West Academic account)
  5. Download the VitalSource Bookshelf desktop or mobile app and sign in with your credentials.
  6. In the VitalSource Bookshelf app, select the title you want to read offline and download the book while connected to the internet. Once the book has been downloaded, a small checkmark icon will appear in the top-right corner of the title and be available for offline reading.

Offline Listening

  1. Download the West Academic Audio app, available free in the Apple App or Google Play
  2. Sign in to the app with your West Academic username and password
  3. Browse or search for an audio title
  4. Download an entire title or individual tracks
  5. Click play to begin listening in the app

Highlight & Annotation

When eBooks are open in the Vital Source ereader, you can select text to highlight, make notes, or create flash cards. These will be saved in your Vital Source account for future reading.

Read Aloud

When an eBook is open in the Vital Source ereader, you can click on the menu under the three dots in the upper right hand corner, then click on "Read Aloud" to start screen reading and hear the resource out loud.
