Banned & Challenged Books: Sexuality

Banned or Challenged on Sexual Grounds

The books listed here are books that have been challenged or banned based on language or descriptions that refer to subjects such as prostitution, adultery, or pregnancy before marriage (Karolides, Bald, & Sova, 1999.) Social views of sex have significantly changed over the years the difference between "what is erotica?" and "what is pornographic?" has become so obscure that the 1970  Report of the United States President Commission on Obscenity had great difficulty identifying this difference (Karolides, Bald, & Sova, 1999.) Questions such as "What is the societal benefit of this work?", "What is the format of this work?", and "Does this work have pictures?" have all been taken into consideration when attempts at defining "What is/is not obscene?" have been made (Karolides, Bald, & Sova, 1999.)
