The books in this section are books that have been challenged or banned for challenging preconceived social norms, meaning they do not adhere to the societal expectations of the censors of their times, which earns them the label of "obscene" (Karolides, Bald & Sova, 1999.) Sova (1999) further expresses that books that are challenged on social grounds are not necessarily explicit in nature but the authors of these books often introduce socially unacceptable ideas, language, speeches, and discussions of racial issues, class standing or sexual orientation that might be conceived as "harmful" to a society or group at the time of their publishing or during the time in which the book is challenged (Karolides, Bald & Sova, 1999.)
