Endnote X9 and EndNote Online: Endnote Online

This guide will assist you with downloading and using the latest version of Endnote.

You can use EndNote Online in conjunction with EndNote or alone. EndNote online is entirely web-based, so you can sign in and access your library from any device.

1. Create an Account

Visit http://www.myendnoteweb.com and sign up for an account using your @highpoint.edu e-mail address.

If you are already using EndNote, you can simply sign in with this account.

2. Import References

If you already have references in your EndNote library, they should show up in EndNote online--if they don't, follow the instructions to "sync" your accounts under the "Get Started" tab of this guide. If you are using EndNote Online alone, you will need to create or import references.

You will begin on this screen, which has shortcuts to all the areas of EndNote online. Click the link for "import references."

You will see this:

Click "import." You will see a red line of text notifying you how many references were imported successfully:

Now you can click "unfiled" to view your list of imported references.

3. Organize References with Groups

If you are only working on one project with a handful of references, you may not need to create groups. If, however, you have many references or multiple projects you will want to take advantage of the grouping feature to organize your library.

You will see this:

You will now see your group under "my groups." Add references like so:

4. Share Groups with Collaborators

After you create groups, you will see options to share the groups with collaborators.

5. Capture Web References

EndNote Online offers a browser plugin you can use to quickly pull in references for web pages.

Under "Downloads" you will see the "Capture Reference" button you can drag to your toolbar:

Now, when you are on a webpage you want to cite, you can click this button and a box will pop up:

6. Create a Bibliography

You can quickly generate a bibliography from EndNote Online under "Format-->Bibliography."

Click "save" to download the bibliography file. Mine opened in Microsoft Word and looks like this:

You also have the option to download a plugin for "Cite While you Write" to use with EndNote Web. You can find this plugin under "Downloads."

Visit the "Cite While you Write" tab of this guide to learn how to use it.
