IEEE Citation Guide: In Text Citations

In-Text Citation Guidelines

  • When you mention a source in your report, put a number in square brackets right there in the text (e.g., [1]).
  • Assign numbers to your sources based on the order in which you first cite them in your writing.
    • The first source you use will be [1] the second will be [2] the third will be [3] and so on.
  • If you refer to the same source again, use the same number as before.
    • The first source will always be represented as [1] 
  • Each reference number should be enclosed in square brackets on the same line as the text, before any punctuation, with a space before the bracket.

Citing more than one reference at once:

  • List each reference number separately with a comma or dash between each reference
    • Ex. 
      • [1], [3],[7]
    • or
      • [1,3,7]
    • or
      • [1]-[5]
