Property: Primary Materials

A guide for the 1L Property course.

Statutes

Property law varies widely by state. To find statutory codes for individual states, visit Lexis or Westlaw. Current, official, unannotated versions may also be found on state legislatures' websites.

North Carolina code can be found here:

  • North Carolina General Statutes on the NC legislature website: https://www.ncleg.gov/Laws/GeneralStatutes
    • Official, unannotated version.
  • West's North Carolina General Statutes Annotated
    • Available on Westlaw. Also available in print in the library, call number NC REF KFN7428 2000 .W47. Use the General Index to look for keywords; entries will point you to the chapter and section of law.
  • General Statutes of North Carolina Annotated
    • Available on Lexis.

Case Law

There are many tools available to find relevant case law for property. Keep in mind that secondary sources, like treatises, hornbooks, and annotated codes, can be an excellent place to find case law. Also, as already stated elsewhere on this guide, property law can be very different by jurisdiction, so keep in mind what jurisdiction you are looking for.

STATE CASE LAW

Resources for all states, including North Carolina, can be found through Westlaw and Lexis with your login. Simply search subject keywords and sort or restrict by jurisdiction.
