New Arrivals and Releases: Horror

Newly acquired films and shows.

Return of the Living Dead (Horror)

"When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains."

          - Image and description from IMDB

"Essential, enormous fun."

          - Chris Hewitt, Empire

"A tongue-in-cheek, splatter-laden homage to George A. Romero's zombie pictures."

          - Jeremiah Kipp, Slant

"Part spoof comedy, part kitschy horror, The Return of the Living Dead was tailor-made to achieve cult status."

          - Brian Eggert, Deep Focus Review

Evil Dead Rise (Horror)

"New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” from writer/director Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan (“I Met a Girl,” “Barkskins”), Alyssa Sutherland (“The Mist,” “Vikings”), Morgan Davies (“Storm Boy,” “The End”), Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable."

"It's not for the faint-hearted but for long-time fans and horror nuts, just sit back and let the blood wash over you."

          - Hanna Flint, Time Out

"A crowd-pleasing new chapter that opens the door to a connected universe uniting the previous films and series."

          - Jen Yamato, LA Times

Scream VI (Horror)

"The four Woodsboro survivors have moved to New York City for a fresh start. Just as they begin to feel safe again, they receive that infamous call. Ghostface reemerges more brutal and relentless than ever, stopping at nothing to hunt them down."

          - Image and description from Paramount

"While still a far cry from the elegance of Wes Craven’s original, Scream VI is the best installment in the series since the second film. It’s tart and suspenseful and has reignited my faith in a once cherished, then tarnished brand."

          - Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

""Scream VI" cycles through nearly the entire cast as possibilities for whodunit but, when we finally know it, the solution is both improbable and entertaining."

          - Chris Hewitt, Star Tribune

Targets (Horror, Criterion)

"Old Hollywood collides with New Hollywood, and screen horror with real-life horror, in the startling debut feature from Peter Bogdanovich. Produced by Roger Corman, this chillingly prescient vision of American-made carnage casts Boris Karloff as a version of himself: an aging horror-movie icon whose fate intersects with that of a seemingly ordinary young man (Tim O’Kelly) on a psychotic shooting spree around Los Angeles. Charged with provocative ideas about the relationship between mass media and mass violence, Targets is a model of maximally effective filmmaking on a minimal budget and a potent first statement from one of the defining voices of the American New Wave."
