EndNote 21: Cite While You Write

Using Cite While You Write (CWYW)

After you download EndNote, you should begin seeing an EndNote X8 tab in Microsoft Word. You can also install the CWYW plugin from EndNote Online. If you do not see this tab, you may need to update to the latest version of Word.

Within this tab, you can easily access references from your EndNote library. You can insert a formatted in-text citation and build a bibliography as you go along. You can even use it to insert tables and figures!

If the plugin installed correctly you will see the this under EndNote X8:

When you click "insert citation" this box will pop up prompting you to find the reference you want:

Now watch the magic happen!

Tables & Figures

Tables and figures can be tricky to create and format in Word.

Another handy feature of EndNote, then, is the ability to store Tables & Figures you can insert using CWYW. The process is very similar to inserting a citation, just choose "insert figure" and find the figure in your library.

Of course, you will first have had to upload a figure in EndNote. You can do that by adding a reference for the figure (see "add references manually), highlighting it, and then clicking References-->Figure-->Attach Figure.

A box will pop up prompting you to find the file to attach:

Upload the file for the table or figure and you're all set to use it in Word.
