eBooks at HPU Libraries: Devices & Downloading

This guide will help you understand how to locate and use eBooks available through HPU Libraries.

Downloading eBooks to a mobile device, a computer or laptop

If you want to check out eBooks and download them to your desktop or laptop computer, you will need to install an e-reader. Ebsco uses  Adobe Digital Editions. Click here to download Adobe Digital Editions (and create an Adobe ID). It's free!

ProQuest eBook Central uses Blue-Fire reader. Both are easy to use and pleasant to view for reading.

DOWNLOADING AN EBOOK IN ProQuest Central.

The process for downloading an eBook is detailed below. With eBook Central, you can use your HPU Username and password to download an eBook.

1. Look for the "Full Download" button in the menu on the left:

2. A box will pop up asking you which device you are using. Select "desktop." Then check the appropriate box to indicate whether or not you are on a public computer. You can then skip the ADE install because you will already have it.

The eBook will download and you will be prompted to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions.

DOWNLOADING AN EBOOK IN ESBCOHOST

You will need to have a personal EBSCO account to download books. Go ahead and set one up and make sure you're logged in.

1. Look for the download button in the menu on the left:

2. The following box will pop up. Click the button for "checkout and download."

The eBook will download and you will be prompted to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions.

Downloading eBooks to a Mobile Device.

There are many free e-reader apps available for ios and Android devices. Bluefire Reader is the preferred e-reader app as it works well with EBSCO and ProQuest Central eBooks.

Once you have downloaded Bluefire Reader from either the iTunes Store (for ios devices) or Google Play (for Android devices), set up an account and log in.

The download process is the same as for a desktop or laptop computer (see instructions in the box to the right), only you will be prompted to open the book in Bluefire Reader instead of Adobe Digital Editions.

Transferring from Adobe Digital Editions to an e-Reader

To transfer a downloaded eBook for ADE to an ereader or mobile device:

1. Open ADE on your laptop or desktop computer.

2. Plug your mobile device or e-reader into your computer.

3. Under "bookshelves" in ADE, you will see your e-reader. Drag your eBook into the e-reader icon, and you should be good to go!

Returning an eBook

Your eBooks will automatically return themselves at the end of the checkout period. If you no longer need them, however, you can return them manually so that another student can check the title out.

Please not that deleting a book from Bluefire Reader using the trash can icon does NOT return it. To return a book in Bluefire Reader:

1. Click the settings icon, and select "list view."

2. Click the information icon beside the book you want to return.

3. Click the "return item" link at the bottom right of the reader.

To return a book in Adobe Digital Editions, simply right-click the title and select "return."
